Descript is not really a caption tool. It is a video editor built around a transcript - you edit the words and the video follows. Captions are one output of that. If editing by transcript suits how you think, Descript is excellent at it and nothing here is going to talk you out of it.
The comparison matters when captions are the actual job and the edit lives somewhere else. Where Descript wins
- Transcript-based editing is its whole design. Deleting a sentence from the text deletes it from the video. We have Text Based Editing too, but Descript built the entire app around the idea and it shows.
- Studio Sound and Overdub. Audio cleanup and voice cloning that fixes a misspoken word without a re-record. We do not clone voices.
- Screen recording built in. Record, edit and publish in one place - good for tutorials and demos.
- Collaboration. Comments, shared projects, team workflows.
If your work is podcasts, interviews or talking-head content and you want one app end to end, Descript is a strong choice.
Where AEJuice wins
It works where you already edit. Descript is a separate application with its own project. Anything you cut in Premiere or built in After Effects has to be exported, taken into Descript, and brought back flattened. Auto Captions is a plugin - the captions appear on the sequence you already have.
Languages: 145 against 25. Descript translates into 61 but only transcribes 25. If the spoken language is not in those 25, it cannot start.
Accuracy, then AI on top. On the standard FLEURS and Common Voice benchmarks our engine holds the lowest word error rate across 99 languages, ahead of Whisper Large V3, Gemini 2.0 Flash and Deepgram Nova-3, at 96.7% on English. Then a language model groups lines by meaning, fixes brand spelling, places emoji and tells a stumble from emphasis.
Audio-only upload. An hour of speech is a few MB of MP3. Descript takes the video file, and meters you on uploaded media minutes.
Compliance controls. Profanity masked in the text, full or partial, plus beep or mute on the audio. Meta and YouTube ad safe modes. Custom flagged words. Brand spelling. Descript has none of this.

How to choose
Use Descript if you want one app for recording, editing, cleaning audio and publishing, and you like editing by transcript.
Use AEJuice if your edit already lives in After Effects or Premiere, you want captions as text layers in that timeline, your language is not in Descript’s 25, your footage is too large or confidential to upload, or you need advertiser-safe wording.
Using both is common: Descript for the rough cut and audio, AEJuice for captions once the edit is in Premiere or After Effects.
